Loches: a medieval town full of charm, a must-see!

If you love old stones, fortified castles and narrow streets steeped in history, then Loches is the destination for you. Located in the Touraine region, this magnificent medieval town is full of character. Overlooking the Indre River, it offers a picture-postcard backdrop of dungeons, Romanesque churches and half-timbered houses.

Less well known than some of the Loire Valley’s great names, Loches is a real gem, often referred to as a “town of art and history”. Here, everything seems frozen in time… but with a warm, lively atmosphere that’s great fun to explore on foot.

An impressive fortressand a tour full of surprises

It’s impossible to pass through Loches without visiting its imposing royal citadel, perched on a rocky spur. The keep, over 1,000 years old, is one of the best preserved in Europe. You can climb to the very top for a panoramic view of the town and valley. Thrills guaranteed!

The tour continues with the royal dwelling, home to such historic figures as Agnès Sorel, the first official favorite of the King of France. The rooms have been well restored, the gardens are in bloom, and the occasional animations bring the whole thing to life. Even children get hooked on history, especially if they like knights and princesses!
